This book gave me so much hope that God uses our weaknesses and strengths in motherhood for His purposes in our children’s lives. It also convicted me to re-commit my prayer life, specifically over my kids by name. If I’m not praying for them daily and devoutly — who is?

1) Get in rooms with others further along than you.

When Moses was leading the Israelites in a battle against Amalek, they succeeded when his hands were raised and they started losing whenever his hands were lowered. As expected, Exodus 17:12 states that Moses’ hands grew weary: “But Moses’ hands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.”

Moses is one of the strongest leaders — one might even say successful — and he needed other leaders and friends to literally hold up his arms.

For your Christian walk, your marriage, your motherhood, and your business, it’s essential to get in the room with other women doing the same thing. You need other women who are a few steps ahead and behind you. They will hold up your arms when you want to quit (and they’ll help you let go when that looks like obedience too). Liz: Clarify Your Message

I got this message on Instagram back in February from a fellow mom and entrepreneur. In that same month I got an email confirmation that my podcast pitch had been accepted! It was one of the most surreal moments of my life— traveling to Charleston to be on Jess Connolly’s podcast. I started my newsletter back in 2021 and despite many seasons of discouragements, re-brands, pivots, YouTube research, and setbacks, Declutter Discontent™ is still going and growing (praise be to God).

There’s so much I could say but here’s what I think matters (I will definitely share more on this topic in our live workshop). You could focus on a niche and your ideal target audience or client. While I do think that step matters, I believe that before you can simplify your content and come up with a strategy, you need to clarify your message.

I’m definitely a newbie when it comes to going on podcasts (there’s a couple that I wish I could re-record honestly because they flopped). But the Lord used this particular opportunity to encourage me. As I sat in Jess’s sunroom to record the episode, she said, “I think you’ve really found your niche and what you’re good at— this content on decluttering the home and heart.” To hear an author, podcaster, and gifted communicator say I’m good at content?! WHAT. A. DREAM.

Start clarifying your message. Get a notepad or use a Google doc. Instead of asking, “What’s my niche? Who’s my target audience?” Consider this— What are you really trying to say? And why does it matter? What’s the problem or pain point that needs to be addressed? Get specific. Nothing broad like “motherhood content.” I realized along the way that I wasn’t the only Christian woman struggling with discontentment, impulsive shopping, and anxiety. Eventually in 2023, the name came to me after three years of posting about it (Declutter Discontent™) and I began communicating it clearly. Because the message ultimately becomes the mission.

Emilee: Simplify Your Content

Whether you love social media and do it as part of your living, or it’s the dreaded task you are always stressed about, being a necessary evil to your other passions, we all have moments of overwhelm and discouragement. Our mission is that after this month inside Mother Maker, we all feel freed to use our online tools for the good of others and the glory of God, and leave the results up to Him!

Whether we are stewarding laundry or social media, we need a system.
It doesn’t have to be fancy or expensive, but it has to help us tend to our tasks faithfully.

By organizing your thoughts on a platform that makes sense to you, it will breathe new life into you and your content.

Theology of Work | Mother Maker No. 1

Liz:

Many women can relate— reading about Proverbs 31 woman either left me feeling frustrated (along with an occasional eye roll) or like a failure. I thought she was annoying because she was too good to be true. Why aspire to an unattainable example? At other times, I was inspired momentarily and then consequently helpless because there’s no way I’d be as successful as her, especially when there was a time in which I had become convinced that to be a good Christian woman meant I should love to cook and bake right? (Spoiler alert: the answer is no!)

The more I read my Bible the more I see that what social media presents as Biblical womanhood and godly motherhood are often rooted in trends rather than Truth. An example from my own life— I used to think I needed to bake my own bread like my mom friends from church in order to be a successful and worthy homemaker.

Doing good work and glorifying God is what actually matters (even if it doesn’t look like your SAHM peers). As I continue to study and try to understand Titus 2, one vital principle I see is this: the role of a mother to be a home keeper or worker at home means caring for the wellbeing of the home and those that reside in it.

Good news! The Proverbs 31 woman is not your enemy or competitor. She’s your co-laborer. She’s you… Your calling to be a mom and a maker (whether that’s throwing a party at your church, writing a book, or starting a business) is not at odds.

The Proverbs 31 woman shows us that it’s possible — and even praiseworthy — to work from home in a way that first and foremost is for the good of the home.

I sit down at my laptop with a lukewarm cup of coffee and a monitor in hand. We are saving for our next birth, a down payment on a house, and as I scroll Instagram, I see more moms fighting about the only right way to be faithful as Christian mothers.

Here is what I know from Scripture and from my community of many godly women mothering 1–7 young children — some who are stay-at-home moms with no creative outlet outside the home, and some with full-time jobs: there are many ways to be faithful, so long as we are staying humble.

Recently, I asked a sweet group of writing friends, “How do you know the difference between godly ambition and selfish ambition?” My friend Walter weighed in, saying it is godly ambition when I can stay present in my home while continuing strategies of growth with integrity. If I begin to compromise my presence, integrity, ethics, or try to grasp for more income out of panic instead of peace, I’ve taken matters into my own hands, trusting in my own understanding.

In Proverbs 31, we see a woman who has presence and purpose in her home. She is not rushing around and grumbling that no one is helping her. She is not wandering aimlessly or pursuing endeavors for the purpose of building a name for herself. She tends to her household, disciplines her children, loves her husband, uses her creative gifting, and generously gives to the needy — all for and from the home. (Read more of our values here.) Isn’t this freeing? This purpose feels like a burden to much of the world. Yet, in Christ, we know that His plan for women can only come from deep love and lead to the most fulfilling and fruitful work.

We are not here to war against the woman called to a different schedule or season than us. We are here to humbly embrace our role as helpers, called to work primarily in the home, putting out our palms saying, “Lord, multiply my nap times and fringe hours.”

We can trust that because of His character and our efforts, we do not need to fear snow for our households, and we can truly laugh at the time to come (Proverbs 31:25).

BRICK: You don’t need to pay to have better boundaries with your phone, but this tool has literally changed my life. The added physical obstacle has kept me accountable to my goals, and I’ve been social-media-free for more than 2,326 hours since I started using it in mid-January. As gals who want to be present at home and most likely still need to show up online as entrepreneurs, this might be a worthy investment to help you do both faithfully.

LMNT Electrolytes: I’m definitely not getting enough ounces of water per day for pregnancy as I take care of my one-year-old, and I can tell a difference in fewer headaches, less cramps, and more energy (without the crash) from these electrolytes! I also love making it my one “fun drink” of the day.

Motherboard Planner: Sadly, the undated planners are out of stock BUT you can follow Cari on Instagram for updates! As a productivity enthusiast, this feels like the perfect planner for moms who want one notebook to keep track of everything— habit tracking, grocery shopping lists, meal planning, and weekly time blocking planning! No more mental lists or multiple note pads! This has helped lighten my mental load.

Toggl Time Tracker: I started using this in April because working from home has lot of pros but one of the cons is fighting the temptation to be constantly working on your phone or laptop from the couch to your bed to the backyard. I wanted to actually keep track of my hours as my own boss and it was convicting to see how I was spending my time and days.
